West Coast icon doubles his duties
Snoop producing nearly an entire album comes as quite a surprise, although it really shouldn't. The D-O-double-G has been dabbling with beat making since Tha Doggfather days. And for the past 15 years, he has been in the studio taking notes from Dr. Dre, Pharrell and countless other celebrated hip-hop producers. On The Big Squeeze, Snoop doesn't astound like the greats he has worked with, but he doesn't sound half bad behind the boards, either.
Producing under the moniker Niggarachi, Snoop uses this compilation to gather some of Cali's most underestimated MCs and vocalists (Kurupt, Kam, Azure, et al.) to flow with him over his bottom-heavy beats. On standouts like "We Came to Bang Out," his keyboard-born loops are somewhat simplistic, yet the way he blends them with booming bass lines and sound effects generates some sure-shot G-funk. When he moves beyond this usual formula, the results are mixed. While the electro throwback "Get It Started" may get parties going, the electric guitar-tinged "Like Rock Stars" just falls flat. For a first official production effort, though, Snoop's potential is present.
