CD REVIEW: HIGH PRIEST, BORN IDENTITY
Feb 27, 2007 2:02 AM, By Max Herman
Attempting to keep the spirit of Anti Pop Consortium alive, High Priest continues to craft some of the most nonconformist hip-hop around. On his solo debut, this MC/producer rarely uses hooks, raps in tirades and often relies on rather eerie synth-based beats. While not ideal for those with short attention spans, this disjointed album has its moments of slickness. On “Pitfalls,” Priest spits sharp antiwar activism atop spacey synths, while the boom bap–filled “Monk Street” sees him valiantly expose the realities of the drug trade that chart-topping rappers tend to ignore.
