CD Review: Statik Selektah, Spell My Name Right (The Album)

Dec 23, 2007 10:56 PM Max Herman (Writer)

Following a successful run in the mixtape market, DJ Statik Selektah makes the natural move into producing with this impressive LP. No doubt, Statik recycles a number of old hip-hop breakbeats here, but as a DJ, he's naturally going to gravitate toward the recognizable. Such is also the case with "Punch Out!" featuring Big Shug where he borrows the theme music from the classic NES game of the same name for a sure-shot throwback. While short on innovative samples, Statik Selektah succeeds by pairing respected MCs (Termanology, Kool G Rap) with punchy production.
