CD Review: The Heliocentrics, Out There

UK collective The
Heliocentrics couldn't have chosen a better name for its debut—Out There derives straight from left
field. Each composition sees this eight-piece act led by drummer Malcolm Catto
concoct a new stew of organic, free-form instrumental music. At times their
daunting strings and percussion can be a bit too creepy for enjoyment
("The Zero Hour"). But if you keep listening, there are gems to be
discovered, like the spacey, jazz-infused hip-hop of "Age of the
Sun." Consider this album akin to a dusty vinyl bin at the thrift
shop—you've got to dig for the goods.
