CD REVIEW: THE BEASTIE BOYS, THE MIX-UP

Jul 2, 2007 7:43 PM Kristi Kates (Writer)

They've got plenty of sass, and everyone knows that the Beasties also generally have plenty to say, so it's quite a surprise that this new full-length is the band's first-ever of all instrumental tracks. Serving as the follow-up to their 2004 release, To the 5 Boroughs, the entire trio is back, with some extra contributions from percussionist Alfredo Ortiz and keyboardist Money Mark—and, surprise part deux, there's not a scratchin' track in the bunch. The cool factor is definitely high, though, and these tracks work well, from the bold sounds of "Suco de Tangerina" to "Electric Worm," "Dramastically Different" (the perfect term, actually, for the overall feel of this set), "Off the Grid," "The Melee" and the opener, "B for My Name." The Beasties definitely rock it, no matter what direction they're pointing it in.
