Aside from working on DJ Shadow's upcoming album, producer and drummer Count is part of the up-and-coming band Halou. The group — also including married couple Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom — has scored the film The Girl's Life (with James Woods), remixed Lyrics Born and Rod Stewart and recently opened for Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins). The trio's next album, Wholeness and Separation (label TBD), is due this year. Although Count (who has also worked with New Order, Run-DMC, No Doubt and Blackalicious) joined the group for its second album, Wiser (Nettwerk, 2001), he has collaborated with Ryan for a decade. So they have faith in each other's work enough to take each other's ideas in different directions. “It takes a lot of trust for a songwriter to let go of an original idea and let some jackass like me mangle it!” Count says.
Ohm Force, iZotope and Waves plug-ins are staples in the band's studio, and Native Instruments synths are their favorite way to start out new ideas. “A single note from some of those synths can sometimes be the catalyst for an entire song,” Count says. But one of the key aspects of the band's creative process is giving each other space to create rather than hover over each other. “Some brilliant musicians simply can't just come up with a great part on the spot,” Count says. “Luckily, these days, hard drives are cheap and easy to get back and forth. I am now working with DigiDelivery on DJ Shadow's record. I really wish that was around while Halou was making the last record. I definitely plan on that being a main part of how we work in the future.”
