Chromeo, DJ Kicks (K7)

Not unlike its predecessors, Chromeo’s contribution to the DJ Kicks Series is a comprehensive showcase of the Montreal, Canada–based duo’s influences. DJ Kicks spans from the R&B-inflected '70s such as Leo Sayer’s “Easy to Love,” through to the early '80s–like Donna Allen’s “Serious” and the present-day, including Chromeo’s cover of Rhe Eagles’ “I Can’t Tell You Why.”
The two make a point of picking singularly unhip and/or obscure numbers from their respective eras, making DJ Kicks all the more interesting and unexpected. Chromeo wear their French-Canadian stripes proudly with more than one track featuring French vocals or production.
No matter what the decade or the ethnicity, DJ Kicks feels like one big hedonistic night at Studio 54. The disco vibe is what drives this midtempo mix. Even the current inclusions, for example Chateau Marmont’s “Solar Antaplex,” sound like a remake of the Midnight Express theme music—and there is nothing wrong with that.
