Dance sounds of the world unite
For someone still a few years shy of his 30th birthday, these days A-Trak displays a remarkably mature and even classic approach to his DJing. The turntablism that won him a DMC world title and the showmanship honed from touring with Kanye are still a part of his sets, but at least for his entry to the Fabriclive mix series, the Canadian DJ lets his track selection steal the show and flexes his considerable skills when he feels like augmenting the energy level. The mix leans heavily on the cabinet-shaking beats he’s been pushing with his Fool’s Gold label, but over the course of 25 cuts, A-Trak fits in a dull array of musical moods and styles known to induce dancing. There’s plenty of classic moments in the set, as things start off with his own massive “Say Whoa” layered with DJ Sneak’s “You Can’t Hide From Your Bud”; it then detours through a DJ Class Baltimore classic and closes with “138 Trek” from DJ Zinc. The newer stuff is all over the map as well, with Boys Noize, Aeroplane, Alex Gopher and DJ Gant-Man all making appearances. But A-Trak never gets gimmicky as he finds the connections and turns in a lively addition to the Fabriclive collection. [3.5 out of 5 stars]
