WMC AND REMIX HOTEL REPORT
Apr 8, 2003 12:00 PM
It’s been a few weeks since the culmination of Winter Music Conference 2003, but damn if it hasn’t taken that long to recover! Recover from partying, you ask? Sure, but that’s not all: Amid all the usual half-nude hoochies, Hummers and fashionistas, we took something new to Miami—the Remix Hotel—featuring three days of total technology immersion (March 19-21) at the Ritz Plaza in South Beach.
With nearly 2,000 preregistered attendees, the Remix Hotel saw a steady stream of DJs, bedroom producers, seasoned professionals and fans eager to get the goods on the latest and greatest from Digidesign, M-Audio, Stanton, Emagic, Cakewalk, Propellerhead, Ableton, Arkaos DJ and others. And with guests such as BT, the Crystal Method, Josh Wink, King Britt, Bad Boy Bill, Faust & Shortee and DJ Craze providing testimonials and hands-on demonstrations, it’s no surprise that so many attendees returned for the full three days.
But the Remix experience didn’t end with the daytime activities; we also hosted evening Sunset Sessions poolside at the Ritz Plaza. In addition to progressive, electroclash and turntablist parties with Dave Ralph, Tommie Sunshine, DJ Craze, Atrak and UK sensation Killa Kella, among others, we hosted a badass Thursday night drum ’n’ bass party with Bailey, Reid Speed, Dara, DB and High Contrast. With Emagic beach balls bouncing every which way and Bacardi and Martini & Rossi Asti going down easy, that party went off in a big way. A big thanks goes out to Edirol’s Rob Read and Grant Davis, who provided the awesome visuals all week. The visuals were the perfect complement to our great nightly lineups.
We in the Remix crew didn’t just stick to our own events; we made it to plenty of other parties, as well. We stopped by the DanceStar Awards long enough to catch Dirty Vegas perform “Days Go By” and to witness Casey Spooner accept Fischerspooner’s award for Best Remix (for Kylie Minogue’s “Come Into My World”). We also swung by the Astralwerks party at Nikki Beach and the Ovum event at Crobar, where Darren Emerson spun a surprise guest set that was absolutely brilliant! We would be amiss, however, if we didn’t give love to Om Records, whose party at Goddess topped ’em all, with exceptional sets by J. Boogie in the upstairs lounge and Afro-Mystik on the main floor.
All in all, we at Remix had a pretty kick-ass time, and we hope you did, too. Many visitors even told us that the Remix Hotel was the best part of the conference, and we couldn’t ask for a better compliment. If you missed out on the first Remix Hotel, never fear: Another Remix Hotel is on the horizon—and you don’t even have to wait until next WMC! Look for the Remix Hotel at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and other upcoming conferences. We may even host a few one-off Hotel events, so stay tuned to www.remixmag.com and the Transmissions newsletter for updates!
